To investigate the Gevert family, Jussi G\u00e4vert and I have started a DNA project. What does that mean?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Gevert is probably the largest blacksmith family in Sweden and most of the family lines are considered to originate from Anders who was active at Forsmark's mill 1627-1632. Anders is believed to have come from Flanders (Belgium) but we do not know anything about his origins there.<\/p>\n

To get a better picture of how the family lines are actually connected (not everything is clear), you can DNA test living descendants. The Y chromosome is inherited from father to son to grandson, and since it is consistent with how the family name is generally inherited, testing for Y-DNA is a suitable method. If as many men as possible from different branches of the family test themselves, then by comparing the results we can draw conclusions about the relationship and map the family.<\/p>\n

One thing we already know is that some descendants of Anders belong to haplogroup I1-L1302 while others belong to a subgroup of R1b. These two branches are thus not genetically linked to each other.<\/p>\n

It is best to start with a Y-DNA37 test which can then be refined if there is a need. The actual sampling is done with a stick that is scraped on the inside of the cheek for half a minute. The sample is placed in a test tube and mailed to a lab. You can see the results by logging into your account at FamilyTreeDNA after a month or two.<\/p>\n
