As part of a slightly larger investigation, I have Y-tested the family Sandman from Pite\u00e5. See overview above.<\/strong><\/p>\n

I wanted to see if two documented family lines from Nils Mikaelsson Sandman b. 1723 agreed and that there were no unexpected relationships. To avoid unnecessary costs, I ordered Y12 tests for Bo Sandman and Ruben Sandman. Y12 is the cheapest type of Y-STR test and the idea was to see that the agreement was reasonable and then proceed with greater accuracy if that proved meaningful. If the results did not match, I could cancel the testing without it being too expensive.<\/p>\n

Happily, the two tests had "genetic distance = 0", ie all 12 markers were identical.<\/p>\n

Two Y12 tests are really too little to be able to say that a historical ancestor is DNA-confirmed. Fortunately, there turned out to be an earlier 12-marker test of the third main line, the Finnish one. It was Ralf Sandman who had tested himself at National Geographic back in 2007. This result has identical markers to the two lines I tested.<\/p>\n

This means that Nils Mikaelsson Sandman's Y12 haplotype (marker values) is confirmed with reasonable certainty and that it can be assumed that the documentation in the church records for the three family lines is correct. Eventually, hopefully refined testing can be done that further strengthens the results.<\/p>\n

However, Y12 is not enough to be able to determine the haplogroup better than it being I1-M253. I1-M253 is very common in the area and everyone who belongs to the group has a common ancestor who lived about 4700 years ago.<\/p>\n
