Turid was the name of the Norwegian fishing boat we had when I was a child. She came from R\u00f8st, the outermost island of Lofoten in Northern Norway. Two young flight lieutenants Hans Bladh and Boo Eriksson got the idea to buy a boat in Norway and take it to Stockholm for the upcoming summer holidays. The adventure was described in 1966 in a series of articles in To Rors with Sail and Motor<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Turid was a so-called sailing yacht built in 1935. She was roughly 10 m long with a wheelhouse in the stern, a hold in the middle and a cabin with three berths in the bow. Under the wheelhouse was an ignition ball engine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hans Bladh and Boo Eriksson found her in a newspaper ad and in July 1965 they arranged a meeting with the owners to do business in Stamsund 100 km north of R\u00f8st.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After refueling and stowing, the journey went back down towards R\u00f8st, where they received a short but thorough review of the boat and machine maintenance before the previous owner handed over command.<\/p>\n<\/div>

The schedule was tight and soon they set off on a course for Trondheim, almost 300 minutes away. The first stage went straight south to Lur\u00f8y outside Mo i Rana and then on from port to port following the coast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Trondheim, Hans and Boo's wives joined and that's where the problems started. After a fuel stop, the engine was supposed to be started, but the starting process became explosive and Turid ran leaky.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The boat was towed to a sandy beach where it was pulled aground with a truck. When there was an ebb and the water receded, the leak was sealed and then it was just a matter of waiting for the tide to try to get free again. It took a couple of tries to succeed. She seemed to be completely tight and they steered out onto the Trondheimsfjord, but after half an hour she leaked so that there was no other alternative but to wait back up towards the shore. This time the sealing went better and it again took off to the south.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The trip continued around the West Country with minor mishaps such as a spreader breakdown outside Haugesund and increasingly bad weather. After sailing from Kristiansand past Skagen, Turid surfed the crests of the waves in a gale towards Gothenburg and clearing customs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The journey continued through G\u00f6ta river, G\u00f6ta canal and the destination in Stockholm was reached on the last day of the holiday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Royal visit<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This was the summer before Turid came to us in 1966. What happened in between I don't know much about, other than that there was a celebrity visit on board on at least one occasion; here stands a very young Crown Prince Carl Gustaf at the helm (future King of Sweden Carl XVI Gustaf).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
