Turid – a skate from Lofoten

Published

Turid was bought at Røst in Lofoten in Northern Norway in 1965 and was driven to Stockholm where we bought her in August 1966 and took her up to Örnsköldsvik. But what exactly was Turid? We didn't know much, but the measurement letter - the target letter - was included and it has become easier to search for information in recent years.

Until very recently, I had not seen any pictures at all of Turid as a fishing vessel - only pictures after the sale to Sweden. But I got in touch with the daughter of her owner Henning Arntsen at Røst who was able to give me this photo of Turid. What was interesting was that the registration number appeared – N-66-RT.

It means boat 66 on Røst in Nordland, Norway.

This number matches the registration in a letter of mark that came with it. But here her name is "Thuri”.

In any case, it says that she was built on "Ranen" in 1935 and that Henning Arntsen became the owner of Turid in 1937.

There is another letter in the archive after our boat, a measurement letter - measurement letter. The name is Turid, no doubt.

But where is she from? Ranen, where is it? There are quite a few places in Norway called something with Ranen, but a good guess is Mo i Rana and the surrounding area. About 100 distance minutes or 20 miles south of Røst.

Anyway, I joined some Facebook groups for Norwegian wooden boats and fishing boats and started asking around. It soon turned out that Ranen might be right, the fjord at Mo i Rana used to be called Ranen, and Mo i Rana was not a place to speak of until later years when the iron works were built.

In the past, it was the town of Hemnesberget that applied, and a lot of boats were built there.

In the group "Boats built on Hemnesberget w/surroundings” I got a pacifier. There was no doubt that Turid belonged there. It didn't take many minutes before most of it was ready.

Turid was built in 1935 by Kåre Hansen at Sound at Hemnesberget for Walter Pettersen, Lødingen higher up in Lofoten. The boat was named "Thor” and the registration N-172-LN.

She was sold after a couple of years to Magnus Nilsen, Svolvær when she was named "Thuri” and shortly afterwards to Henning Arntsen at Røst, who thus let the name become “Turid". Turid is actually a name related to Thor.

The engine was a 16 hp Wichmann spark ball engine.

In the Hemnesberget group they had control; quickly a clip appeared with a picture of Turid signed Kåre Hansens Båtbyggeri. Maybe it was an ad in the 1960s.

Incidentally, there must have been two boat builders in Sund, Kåre Hansen Sund and Aksel Møllevik & Sønner.

Now I hope it is possible to produce some sort of template or drawing for the boat, that would be exciting!
